Groote Vallei Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil
Groote Vallei Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil has won multiple awards. Groote Vallei has 2000 Mission trees and 2000 Frantoio and Leccino trees. These trees bear olives which produce a typical Tuscan peppery tasting olive oil. The combination of the wind, sun and earth and of the friendly Western Cape climate gives the olive oil a distinctive character.
The olives are harvested by hand from mid April until the end of June.
After being harvested at the proper stage of ripeness and maturity, our olives are crushed and the extra virgin oil is extracted on the farm within 24 hours of picking. The oil is extracted from the pulp by means of a centrifuge in an Oliomio 50 unit. The process of “cold extraction” maintains the fresh olive’s delicate cut-grass and peppery flavour and aroma.
Olive oil is unique because it combines the pleasures of the palate with the virtues of healthy eating. Due to its high oleic acid content, it protects the heart and arteries by lowering low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (“bad” cholesterol) and raises high-density lipoprotein levels (“good” cholesterol).
Olive Oil is rich in Vitamins E, A, D and K.
In order to qualify to be labeled Extra Virgin Olive Oil by the South African Olive Industry Association the oil must contain less than 0.8% Free Fatty Acid and be free of any taste defects. Groote Vallei oil at time of testing contained 0.29% FFA.
